I was actually going to write my own post but this touched me more than anything I could have put together. This was sent to me today and I felt it needed to be posted to spread the word about the fundraiser tomorrow at Shakeys Pizza. Please read below.

Meet Randy Flores, whom since November 15, has been suffering from a tragic accident that ended in the loss of not only his four month old daughter, Randi Flores, but also his beloved wife, Tricia.
This couple was always giving back to the community, and before Tricia departed from us, she donated her organs and gave the gift of LIFE to SIX people in need... the youngest of which being six years old!

My heart has been deeply touched in the past week at how the community has come together and surrounded him with lots of love, prayers and donations to help him prepare for final services. I can't even begin to imagine the pain he has endured, but I admire his strength through this heartbreaking event.

My heart is always moved when I hear or read stories about paying it forward, or making a difference in people's lives.... This woman made a difference not only to the six people whose lives she saved, but to many others as well. I would love honor her by having you share this story with your followers... in hopes they may find it in their heart to make a small donation, or even just prayers for this family and most important their children... who will be celebrating these upcoming holidays without their mother.

There is an online fundraiser at giveforward . com
search Randy Flores and there you will find the page where any donation can be made. There will be a fundraiser benefit tomorrow at Shakeys in Whittier between 6 and 9 pm... 25% of the sales will go toward the family. With your help we can make this a citywide event and touch Randy's heart, just as his wife has touched the heart of many.

Please let me know if you are able to help.

    The Wing Fix

People say I don't blog enough and they are right but when it comes to blogging I have to be compelled to do so. So here it goes I am compelled.

Here in Whittier we are very passionate about our food and food choices. I love that about Whittierites! With Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and all of the rest you better be on your "A" Game. We are living in the day and age of "It's the best" or "It Sucks" and that is a real shame. I don't live in that world I know for a fact there is a happy medium with tons of real, real good food options out there. In fact I am going to share one of those real, real good food options with you. I call it the "Hidden Gem" of Uptown Whittier, The WING FIX.

    6518 Greenleaf Ave Ste 12

The Wing Fix is located right off of Greenleaf tucked away in a nice little corner inside Serenity Plaza. Often overlooked because of the location I am here to tell you it is hidden no more.

Just walk past the Golden Ox and head towards the back
    you can't miss it!

I actually bought a pizza on this day and I thought "Hhhhhhhmmmmm some wings would go great with this" so I called in the order from the pizza place and placed an order for 18 wings, three flavors. Devils Kiss, Rodeo & Godfather. The staff is great here the girl that took my order was really up beat and professional and schooled me on the wing flavors. Always a good sign! It took me about 15 minutes to get there and I walked in and saw my friend from high school eating with his family of four, awesome! He said he loves it there and he comes in often. There was also another table of six and two more tables of two. Not bad for a Wednesday night. Oh and they ALL got My Whittier stickers!
    On Tap!
Shock Top, Pacifico & Stone IPA
I got to the register and Jessica the Wing Fix fixture greeted me with a smile, great staff here. I told her I had a pick up order and after a short wait the wings were up. I spent some time taking it all in and noticed the
     Happy Hour Special
    Monday thru Thursday
    4pm - 6pm
79c Wings & 25% off all Sides and Beer
    Dine in Only

You are going to fall in love with the
    Godfather Sauce!

If you are a Fantasy Football freak and you are looking to stay home and watch all of the games until your eyes pop out of your head you might want to order something to go. They have a great take out specials of all sizes. Here is one that might work for you.
    30 WINGS / 3 FLAVORS
    3 SIDES
Who doesn't need and Ice Cold Beer to cool down
after a spicy hot wing? Nice big beer mugs :)

Devils Kiss, these had just the right kick and flavor!

Like I said before there are so many places to eat in Whittier and I hope to get to all of them one day. But for now I am going to hit each place one at a time and the Wing Fix will definitely be one of my usual stops. If you haven't tried it yet and you are looking for good wings please stop by I would love to hear what you think about the Wing Fix. They also offer great Sandwiches, Wraps & Salads. When it comes to restaurants in Whittier I would love to say I have been to them all but the truth is I really haven't. I only have one stomach and limited time so in many occasions I will hit a restaurant and it will take me awhile to get back again. That was the case with La Pescadora, my childhood friend hit me up last week and said "hey we are going to go watch some football and eat menudo at La Pescadora you should come by." I haven't been to La Pescadora in so long I thought it would be a great idea. I walked in on Sunday morning at about 9:50am and the restaurant was already in the groove. Waiters and waitresses greet you on the way in, food is already being served and the smell inside was wonderful. I made my way over to the bar area and my first thought was "DAMN!"

If you are a football fan and love to watch the games this might be the hidden gem you have been looking for. It is a great bar area, plenty of seating, great TV's with all of the NFL package games. The staff here is so great they will even try and put the game of your choice on. We sat down and soaked in the atmosphere browsed the menu and settled in. People started to come in wearing NFL jerseys looking just as happy as I was to be there. My buddy Jesus said it best that day "This place is awesome and I am glad my Cowboys are winning but its not about the game or the food or beer. It is who you are eating and drinking with while watching the game."

"It's not where you watch but who you watch with"
    J.Janacua aka Zues
The menudo is made to order so if like yours a certain way just let the waiter or waitress know. if you like less meat mor meat. More soup less soup etc.

The food was really good and the Menudo was definitely worth going back for. I also split a chorizo burrito with my buddy Aggie and it was really good as well. It was really large more than we could eat and that is always good! $3.00 Drafts I was drinking Dos XX's like it was going out of style.

My wife loves a good Nacho plate and this one looked delish! I'm going to have to bring her next time so she could try these :)
Alfonso Aguilar is the owner of this establishment and he took some time and talked with me for a bit on Sunday. The first thing that struck me when I met him was how super cool and down to earth he was. I mean this dude genuinely appreciated my group of friends and the business we brought. Five minutes in to the conversation you could feel how passionate he is about his business. He has put some hardcore blood, sweat and tears in to this place. Alfonso is really open to hearing about ways to improve his business and that is a great quality to have. He admits at times it has been hard with the ups and downs of the economy but he has persevered. I will totally be back. The staff here is well trained and friendly, the food is real good and the bar was just right for football. plenty of TV's they even have a large movie screen TV in the dining room, genius!
La Pescarora is Los Angeles Laker Headquarters. Yup you can catch all of the games here and enjoy Laker action on the big screen TV's with all of the food and drink specials you can handle.

As a Laker fan you know you never jump ship. It is nice to know there is somewhere I can go to be around people that bleed "Purp & Gold"
La Pescadora has a full bar? Yes I am not sure if you noticed how hard it is to get a stiff drink in the uptown area. Take it from me it ain't easy! At La Pescarora you can get a Margarita just the way you like it. If that isn't your cup of tea crab a Vodka on the rocks. If you ever need a stiff drink hit
La Pescadora and they will take care of you, so good to know.
La Pescadora is also available for party's. This was a recent party put on by Whittier High School it was quite the reunion bash!

Book your next event here Banquet room is available. La Pescadora also would love to cater your next event check out the menu.
My overall experience was enjoyable I appreciated the owner and staff doing a great job on Sunday. The place eventually filled up and bowls of menudo flowed along with the beer. I said my good bye's to my buddys and to the new friends I met and walked out on to Greenleaf Ave. The sun was shining and it wasn't to hot, my belly was full and right then at that moment for the billionth time in my life I was so happy be a resident of the city of Whittier.

    Thank you
Thank you to the owner Alfonso I had a great time. I appreciated you taking the time to talk with me
Aggie thanks for the invite brotha good call.
Jesus J aka Zues it was great to see you man I hope we can do it again real soon, you are the man! it was great to see for family as well.
Carlos aka Beef always good to see you man, Go Raiders!
To Bert H and his Mrs H it was great to meet you both and it was great watching the game with you guys.
To The Staff I am not sure if I caught you guys on a good day but EVERYONE that I encountered that day was lights out fantastic. My waiter was on his game and totally pro, nice job.

To all Whittier residents get out and enjoy what Whittier has to offer. Help a Whittier biz out you will be happy that you did.

Whittier, The Poetical Works of John Greenleaf 1889

One of the things my wife and I love to do most is to go Estate Sale shopping in Whittier. We also love to cruise the streets of Whittier and hunt for a good Yard Sale. This weekend we were out and about and came across an Estate Sale on Greenleaf / Broadway. It was at a house I have past a million times over the years and I was finally going to see the inside of this old gem of a house. Needless to say it was a privilege to walk the halls of this home and look at all of the amazing things for sale. On my way out I hit the bookshelf and there it was.

It was a book that said WHITTIER on the cover. I had no idea what a treasure I was holding at first glance. It turns out this book is a book of John Greenleafs Poetical Works, 339 pages of Poems and Illustrations from 1889. This is his complete collection of poems.

In these volumes, for the first time, a complete collection of my poetical writings has been made. While it is satisfactory to know that these scattered children of my brain have found a home, I cannot but regret that I have been unable, by reason of illness, to give that attention to their revision and arrangement, which respect for the opinions of others and my own afterthought and experience demand. That there are pieces in this collection shich I would "willingly let die," I am free to confess. But it is now to late to disown them, and I must submit to the inevitable penalty of poetical as well as other sins. There are others, intimately connected with the authors life and times, which owe their tenacity of vitality to the circumstances under which they were written, and the events by which they were suggested.

The long poem of Mogg Megone was in a great mesure composed in early life; and it is scarcely necessary to say that its subject is not such as the writer would have chosen at any subsequent period.

    Amesbury, 18th 3d mo., 1857.

    John Greenleaf Whittier

The book is a pretty good size 10 inches by 6 1/2 inches
This book has so much character. It is an amazing to hold this beauty.

    Signed June 17, 1891

    The Poetical Works, John Greenleaf
    The Riberside Press, Cambridge

    "Upon his pitchfork leaning"

"Skipper Ireson stood in the cart"

    Amazing poems

As Islam's Phrophet, when his last day drew
Night to it's close, besought all men to say
Whom he had wronged, to whom he then should pay

A debt forgotten, or for pardon sue,
And, through the silence of his weeping friends,
A strange voice cried, "Thou owest me a debt;"
"Allah be praised!" he answered. "Even yet
He gives me power to make to thee amends.
Oh, friend! I thank thee for thy timely word."
So runs the tale. Its lesson all may heed,
    For all have sinned in thought, or word, or deed;
Or, like the Prophet, through neglect have erred.
All need forgiveness, all have debts to pay
Ere the nightcometh, while it still is day.

So many great poems in this book. I am really happy to have found such a treasure. To think I only paid ONE DOLLAR for this book seems beyond incredible. All of my positive thoughts about the city of Whittier and the people in this city lead this book to me. I appreciate it and hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
My Whittier will have a booth at the Walnut Festival on October 5th I will bring this book along for those that would like to see it up close.
    See you soon.

    Green Burrito of Los Nietos

Guest Writer: A Number 1 Fan

    Green Burrito – “RASPADAS”
Back in the day, there was a magical fast food restaurant in a part of Whittier called Los Nietos that served vintage Mexican style snow cones.  Now, you can walk into a Carl’s Jr and order a carne asada burrito from the Green Burrito menu.  In the early 80’s, the Green Burrito was its own stand alone taco stand.  The one on Norwalk Blvd near Slauson Ave sold a taste of heaven:  RASPADAS

This was the old Green Burrito back in the day in Los Nietos, CA

There was an old fashioned snow cone machine located inside the kitchen of the Green Burrito.  This spot was old school.  You ordered and picked up your food at the window and ate outside on benches.  The window to the left of the taco stand is where they made and sold your RASPADAS.
This was the type of machine they used. It was incredible and made the best ice!

The GB sold RASPADAS in several different sizes, all in a tub size cup.  It would start from a traditional 24oz cup for 99 cents and go all the way to a Kentucky Fried Chicken sized tub for I think 4.99.  On sweltering hot summer days, I would go into the truck with my pops and bring our family “Igloo”, or cooler. We would load it up with an extra large RASPADA.  Inside the tub, would be several straws and spoons.  It was a great treat for the family, as all members could share an XL.  Leftovers were always put back into the freezer at home to share later in the night, but be careful!  If you left the straws or spoons in the tub, they would freeze with the ice!

The RASPADA came in only three flavors:  strawberry/pineapple; strawberry only; pineapple only.
Life was good in the 80's

Later on, I learned they sold the syrup for the RASPADAS at the local Smart and Final on Washington Boulevard.

I wish I could go back in time and eat a RASPADA.  It was a great treat on a hot day in Whittier!
