As I like to say "February is in the books" and I thought it would be a cool idea to recap the month. This would be a good way to tie all that is My Whittier in to one tight little blog post. My Whittier has tons of action going on here with the blog and of course with the Facebook page as well as the new website that is always evolving.

Here we go! This is the recap for My Whittier's February 2014

One of the highlights of my life came in February. Some people aspire to be academy award winning actors or maybe even an astronaut or Doctor? One of my dreams was to appear on one of VW Gold Mine's awesome displays. All of us here in Whittier have become accustom to the creative displays Ralph and Gold Mine come up with. We have been fortunate enough to see Octomom, Tiger Woods after the car crash night, Michael Jackson and even Prince Williams baby, classic! So when I saw the display dedicated to My Whittier I was blown away. It will be something I will never forget, dreams do come true. A million thank you's to Ralph and staff for this.

Ralph Chase and crew opened the doors here at VW Gold Mine in October 1973 and they have been doing business in the city of Whittier ever since! VW Gold Mine has New & Used VW Parts. They encourage you to call and speak with their knowledgeable staff and talk anything VW. They have used cars for sale as well as vintage parts for your special project. As I have said before Gold Mine is part of the fabric of Whittier. Doing things right and consistent year after year after year. So proud to have this establishment in the city of Whittier. Stop by and see them.

Look Mom I made it on to the display at VW Gold Mine!

We lost some great, talented people in February. You might see me post things like this on my Facebook page. I post things like this because when I was growing up in Whittier music, movies and food played such a huge part in my life. Even now these type of things influence me and inspire me creatively. It wouldn't be right if I didn't pay my respects to these three gentlemen.

Aspire to be great in your own life it's fun.

Once again February was a great month to remind everyone in Whittier to SHOP SMALL. One of the reasons I started My Whittier was to really get behind my city and champion efforts to help the city thrive. The way I do my part is to shop locally as much as I can. I also eat here in the city very often. Small business intrigues me because I know how much effort goes in to these ventures. So I encourage everyone to help support our local business owners and Shop Small in Whittier.

Whittier has so much to offer.
Have fun and get out there and support

The most popular Facebook post I had in February was this picture of Noa Noa Nightclub. If you are a Whittier local that goes way back chances are you had a few cocktails here at Noa Noa's on Greenleaf in Whittier.

More than 7,500 people saw this post. 22 Shares, 65 comments & 247 Likes. It brought back so many memories for a ton of Whittier folks.

Two restaurants took center stage in February. I know I sound like a broken record but Phlight is my favorite restaurant in Whittier. I was so happy to take my wife here on Valentine's Day. We had such an amazing meal with amazing drinks and service. It is always right on the money I can't ever get enough. My wife and I were fortunate enough to meet one of the owners Jay Arroyo on this night and what a great dude. Jay if you are out there thank you again man! Super solid gesture and it was so great to finally meet you in person. I hope to get over to Portsmouth in March.

The other great restaurant I had a chance to go to was The Rusty Monk. My wife and I went and had dinner here and we were blown away by the design of this place. It was a great experience all around and we could not have had a better experience. The food, staff and look and feel of this place was top notch. Please check out my blog talking about my visit to the Rusty Monk. I really can't wait to go back it is such a great addition to the city of Whittier and our growing food landscape.

I was also stoked to grab this Sha Na Na Album for .25 cents this month. I was such a huge fan back in the day. I would wake up on Saturday morning and watch the Sha Na Na show. Bowzer was the man!

This was a cool little tidbit that came in to me from one of our friends of Facebook. This aired on Nickelodeon's cartoon The Fairly Odd Parents. Super Cool!

Whittier is on the map!!

I post a ton of music on my Facebook page. It is my way to put a soundtrack to the page as well as communicate the way I am feeling on a particular day. Music is such a large influence in my life and what I do. The way I think is through music and pictures. Here were a few songs that made an appearance on the My Whittier Facebook page in February.

The Rusty Monk

My wife and I have been trying to get to the Rusty Monk for quite some time. This is the new restaurant that opened up late last year. It is located on Greenleaf Ave between Rocky Cola and Uptown 2000. Many of you have driven past wondering "What is that place?"

The Rusty Monk is a Belgian Style Gastropub. I went in to The Rusty Monk not knowing what to expect, no idea. Yes I knew it was a Gastropub and I heard a little bit about it but I was really looking forward to experiencing it on my own without any preconceived notions. When my wife and I walked in I immediately had to take a step back and admire the interior design of this place. Wow. I was in Whittier but I wasn't in Whittier you get me?

It is one thing to open up a restaurant and slap some paint on the walls and get some tables and chairs set up for business. But when I walked in I saw the vision that the owner had and boy did he deliver in spades. Before we even looked at a menu I was already having an experience and I appreciate that shit. The owner Kyle crafted this place like one of the crafted beers on the menu. Bad Ass!

We were greeted immediately by a really accommodating host and she had us seated pretty quick. She sat us down and went over all of the specials. She even asked if we had been there before and welcomed us knowing it was our first time. The place was full and there was a buzz in the air for sure. Soon after that Zack our waiter showed up and he was a true professional.

I had to give our waiter Zack props this kid has the goods. Thank you for taking great care of my wife and I Zack we will be back to see you soon.

The beer and wine selections are ridiculous in a good way. So many options to choose from we were super stoked with our selections. My wife had the Rusty Monk Ale to go with her Schnitzel dish. Schnitzel is tender pork cutlet lightly breaded, She really enjoyed it. I had the Buffalo Belgian Stout to go with my "Sausages in Love" plate, sausages beer poached & grilled. Everything was really good and like I said before it was an experience. It was an experience here in my own backyard. Here in My Whittier, here in "Our Whittier" do you realize how cool that is!?

My wife and I will be regulars here at
The Rusty Monk

So if you are looking for a unique experience that comes with great service, great drink and "delicious but approachable" dishes come visit the Rusty Monk. It is establishments like this that bring class and creative thinking to the city of Whittier. We are trapped in this "Fast Food" mentality and it is places like this that allow us to stop, converse and enjoy the here and now.

  • Zack our waiter, thank you for your professionalism and knowledge of the product. Thank you for taking care of our seating issue without blinking an eye.
  • Thank you to the owner Kyle Koestner. What you bring to the city can't be measured and I for one appreciate your all encompassing talent. You bring an element to Whittier that is something to be proud of. With establishments like yours and the other creatives in the area Uptown Whittier is in good hands.

Well after the long wait Skateland has made it back to WHITTIER!

No, no, no wait not the actual Skateland it is actually the new SKATELAND Button. Yes if you grew up in Whittier or anywhere near the city of Whittier chances are you skated at Skateland at some point. Backwards, forward, couples, speed skate, over nighters, the Hokie Pokie! It was a huge part of my childhood growing up in the 80's. Even when I wasn't physically there at Skateland just driving by and seeing it from the car was comforting to me for some reason. When you are a kid you never realize that the things you hold close sometimes go away and never come back. So as part of the My Whittier Button Collection I have added the NEW Skateland Button so no one ever forgets. It is a great keep sake that can be passed down to the younger generation as you tell them all of the great stories of Skateland. So check out the
My Whittier Store and grab one today and check out all of the other goodies.

Well her it goes my first blog post of 2014.

This year has started off with a bang just like so many of you I to have been busy trying to get the year off to a great start. I have been keeping my eyes, ears and taste buds open for all of the great things going on in Whittier. Getting through the holidays was a major challenge this year with so much going on. So many tamales to eat, so much shopping to do, making sure time was spent with family and friends. At the end of it all I had a massive holiday hangover. Holiday hangover for me usually comes with a case of writers block. So as I make my way around the city I am always looking for inspiration.

It was late afternoon on a Wednesday on Bright St. when I decided to stop by one of Whittier's newest stores LOCAL FIXTURE. I can honestly tell you before I even walked through the front door I was hit with a rush of inspiration and good vibes. As I stepped foot inside my inspiration and good vibes were met with immediate creative respect for the owners that put this place together. I thought to myself "Oh shit these guys have something here."

Come in and experience Local Fixture

As I slowly made my way around the store my admiration for the design of this place grew. They have a large pool table to the left and it sits there not as a prop but sitting there almost asking you to rack em and get a game going. A Leather couch and large leather chair sit next to the pool table for lounging. This place is a great spot to touch base with a friend before you head over to Phlight for dinner. Maybe you want to have a casual business meeting or work on your tablet, this place would be perfect for that. With all of that going on the "Fine" items for sale still have a strong presence without intimidating you. There are no pushy sales people, in fact when I was approached by the person running the shop she offered me a complimentary cup of Stumptown coffee. Now that was cool thanks Andrea you were super helpful!

Rack em!

LOCAL FIXTURE offers you a place to shop for fine goods and makes you feel comfortable doing that. It is a place where you can be visually stimulated and totally comfortable in your own skin. Come and spend some time here and get creatively motivated and infused with positive energy.

Serving Stumptown Coffee

As I made my way around the showroom I started to appreciate how good it felt to own something nice. Even a middle age dude like myself finds enjoyment shopping for a high end wallet or shaving accessory now and again. I even picked up some after shave balm, no shame when it comes to taking care of your skin. The Local Fixture has a variety of self care products that really do the trick. I am going to stop by again with the wifey and show her a few items that I have my eye on. I can always use a new journal.

Great wallets stop by and take a look

Great selection of shades

LOCAL FIXTURE has something for everyone and then some!

Women; purses & Clutches, Jewelry, Sunglasses, wallets (men & women) Travel & Workbags, diaper bags, Bath Soaps, Body Apothecary, Face & Skin Care, Hand Soaps and Lotios, Eau Parfum, Nail Polish, Socks. Mens; Bags, Luggage, Backpacks, Shaving Skincare, Beard & Mustache, Men's Bath and body, Men's Haircare. Gifts; Arts & Crafts, Bar Accessories, Kitchenware, Candles, Decor, Journals, Phone Cases and so much more. Kids and Tot items available as well.

Local Fixture is "My Whittier Approved"
Stumptown Coffee and some After Shave Balm, yeah!

I had the privileged to talk with the owners Jason and David Chung and they could not be nicer guys. I could sense that they are two "stand up" guys that really care about what they are doing and really wanted to put their stamp on this store. They have created a unique experience from the heart and I am really happy to know that there is a store like this here in Whittier. Awesome job guys!

If shopping isn't your thing you can still pop in here and grab what you want without crazy department store lines. You can hang out on the leather sofa while your wife or girlfriend takes her time looking at bags and sunglasses. Maybe even play some pool while she shops. With Valentine's Day right around the corner don't panic. Stop by the Local Fixture for a unique and thoughtful gift for someone special in your life.

I have to agree with the description of this great store "equal parts store and community hang out". This place is like getting a brand new baseball glove for Christmas. When you get a new baseball glove it looks great it smells great and you love to put it on for a came of catch. Over time you break that glove in until it fits just right and you grow to love it. Local Fixture is Whittier's brand new leather glove, come spend some time here and make it your own.
