THURSDAY SPOTLIGHT - ROUTE 69 ROMANCE PARTIES

As you know I have great appreciation for people that have the heart and guts to start up their own business. We have so many great hard working entrepreneurs here in Whittier doing great things. So I thought it would be cool to acknowledging the people who have aspirations of starting their own biz. I'm talking to the people that dream about owning their own store or restaurant one day. I am talking to the Artists, Musicians, Barbers, Cooks, Bakers. Creative people who are at home right now working on their master plan. There are so many of you working a job to stay a float while chasing your dream of owning your own business on the side. Burning the candle on both ends because you have a deep love for what you do. If what I am saying resonates with you in any way I would like to hear from you. I am a firm believer in the power of positive thinking and support. I know anything can be achieved if you want it bad enough, if you love what you do with passion. For those of you in Whittier with a dream I support and believe in you. Spotlight Thursday is for you.

GREG'S AUTO BODY

As a Whittier resident and part time blogger I find myself writing about a great meal or restaurant. I often write about nostalgic things, places that used to be here in Whittier but are no longer around. I also love writing about all of the different business's that we have here in Whittier and giving the residents a little more insight about all of these great places. But sometimes you just have to write a blog purely out of respect for what a business owner has been able to accomplish.

I had the pleasure to talk with Greg Gunter Owner of Greg's Auto Body in Whittier & Santa Fe Springs.

Greg's Auto Body
Established in 1970

Greg started his business in 1970. Let's put this in to prospective, first of all I was two years old. The Beatles had just broken up and Floppy disks were just introduced. The following year the first VCR would hit the market. So naturally when you have an opportunity to talk with anyone who has been in business this long you ask a few questions. My first question was, how? How have you been able to stay in business as long as you have? Greg admits there have been many ups and downs and it wasn't a cake walk. He says there have been many, many changes over time. The economy has fluctuated over the years but the two things that have remained the same have been cars and people. People want to be treated well and they want quality work. When you have been working on cars for over 40 years there isn't much Greg hasn't seen.

Whittier Location opened in 2001
Follow Greg on Twitter

Greg is a strong advocate of community service. He told me that he tries to get involved with as many community activities as he can. With 40 years plus under his belt who can argue with his formula.

Proud Lions Club Member &
Whittier Chamber Member.
When it comes to Community Greg is all in!

As we were talking I was thinking to myself "This is like talking to one of my old high school buddies" Greg was totally down to earth and tells it like it is and I really appreciate that.

40 year celebration 2010

Greg's Auto Body does it all: Auto Collision Specialist, Auto Body Repair, Bumper Repair, Fleet Services, Frame straightening.

All Major Credit Cards Accepted

Greg does not believe in shortcuts or quick fixes. When you leave your car at Greg's you are going to get your car back restored to it's original condition. Sometimes you need to pay a little extra for that kind of work but when talking about one's car isn't that worth it? I think so. Greg and I talked about the impact of social media and websites and such. Greg has followed suit seamlessly he has the website, Facebook page and Twitter. He agrees that in today's day and age it is necessary to have a social media presence. But at the end of the day when the smart phones and tablets and PCs are not being used it is a hand shake or a helping hand in the community or a simple straight answer to a difficult question that holds true after 40 years.

Greg's Auto Body one of Whittier's Finest

Greg thank you for taking the time to speak with me I really do appreciate it. As a member of the Whittier Community I appreciate and respect what you have been able to accomplish. Thank you for all of the continued years of service you will provide the city of Whittier. I hope I never need your services (knock on wood) but if I do you can bet I will stop by.

Amy Rodriguez has lived in Whittier for 8 years. She and her family love it here. Amy has two kids, 10 and 7 years old. and she has been a Tupperware consultant for just over 3 years. She originally started Tupperware to pay for her family's Disneyland passes, but it has grown to so much more than that. Amy loves the connections it has given her to the community. From home parties, fundraisers, boutiques, to coordinating events for non profits. Amy feels like she is able to give back to my community everything it has invested in me.

Mother's Day is right around the corner!
Grab some great items.

Check out her website or my fan page when you get a chance. She looks forward to hearing from anyone that wants to make positive connections.

If you see Amy around town please say HI. She loves meeting new people. Amy is always down for a one on one brainstorming session, not always to see what you can do for me or what I can do for you , but to see what we can do for our Whittier community to make it a better place.

Amy is super cool and totally down to earth.

REMEMBER THE DONUT MAN?

As I get older some memories fade off in to never never land and some stick inside my mind and never go away. There are so many things I don't recall about my childhood but growing up as a small child in Pico Rivera I do remember seeing "The Donut Man" Better known as the Helm's Bakery Man. We lived over by Rivera Elementary School and I remember my mom and sister and all of the neighbors making their way outside when the Donut Man would roll through. Fresh donuts on shelves right inside the car, genius!

I can almost smell the fresh donuts!

When I close my eyes and think about it I can almost smell the fresh donuts. I can see the smile on everyone's face making their way towards the car. It was a simple time back then quality and customer service was the order of the day. Donuts right to your door step what a concept.

Now that I am older I can see a slight "boomerang" effect happening. I think business owners are putting solid efforts in to the look and feel of what they are offering. I also think that they are making real efforts to bring customer service back to the forefront.

Can you imagine it? You wake up on a Sunday morning and you hear the faint ringing of a bell. It's the Donut Man!! You run outside and there he is, he is there parked. His Station Wagon is clean and looks showroom ready. The back is open, the shelves are stocked with fresh donuts, bagels and muffins. We are now in the year 2014 so he now has hot coffee and your Sunday paper. You get your goodies and you are back in your house enjoying your fresh donut, coffee and paper! Hey I can dream can't I?

Taking a lesson from the people who did it before us and did it right is so important. I appreciate the day and age we live in now but bringing concepts from the past and introducing them to our new world would be so great.

Are you the next Donut Person?

Here we go!

Sarah has loved baking cupcakes since she was a little girl. So she started doing them for family and friends and charging a small amount. She has had so much positive feedback from family gatherings, friends and customers she decided to make an Instagram page.

Maybe you are looking for some great tasting affordable desserts
for your next party? These are 80's inspired.

The support has been really exciting for her but she is now ready to take the next step. She really wanted a way to reach out to my community since she grew up here in Whittier. She would love to establish a business right here in Whittier selling her cupcakes locally and to other neighboring cities.

She has been told that her cupcakes are “deliciously unique.”  Most people seem to always request her “Strawberry Jello” cupcakes or the “S'mores Cupcake” the most. The homemade cream cheese frosting is a real favorite and that is usually combined with red velvet.
