As we all know SHOP SMALL Saturday is almost upon us and I wanted to give a shout out to all of our local establishments here in Whittier, California. I encourage all of the Whittier residents to "SHOP WHITTIER" and that also means eating and having a drink in Whittier as well. As we get ready to see our family members and compose Christmas lists consider these 5 reasons to Shop Small, Shop Whittier.

It makes such a huge difference when
you Shop Small & Local

#1 Shopping local helps our local economy. The money we spend in our community has a greater impact on your community than spending your money at large national brands.

Trax Shoes
13013 Philadelphia St

Why? The tax dollars we are spending at local businesses support city programs and improve community services. It is estimated that every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, over half of that money remains in our local economy, compared to less than half of the $100 you spend at a non-locally owned store. Sounds like a win for Whittier!

#2 Support Entrepreneurship. I am a huge advocate for the entrepreneurs of Whittier. With a weak job market and so many companies asking workers to go above and beyond their job title without compensation, starting your own business is almost a no brainer for some.

Many entrepreneurs do it for the love and offer great products and personal service.

Follow these great business on Instagram

#3 Local Business = Local Jobs. I can tell you first hand how good it feels to shop, eat  & drink local. Every time I do I know that my money helps support local workers in my community.

13009 Philadelphia St

So many great food and bar destinations here in the city of Whittier. We are quickly becoming a foodies paradise! After you do tons of shopping in Whittier grab some lunch and dinner at one of our many local eateries and watering holes.

6740 Greenleaf Ave
One of Whittier's best places to grab some food and drink

#4 Shopping local helps build a communities character. Whittier is such a unique place to live and visit. We have a growing population of 83,000 plus but we still have a small town feel.

Whittier offers some of the best restaurants and bars around. The Rusty Monk and Phlight are just two restaurants out of many to choose from here in Whittier.

Follow Phlight restaurant on IG #phlightrestaurant

Whittier also has a unique mix of shops, boutiques, salons, barber shops and so much more. I suggest you venture out and see what Whittier has to offer this holiday season.

Visit your favorite barber this holiday season

#5 Special Attention. How many times have you walked in to a large nationally owned chain and practically had to run someone down to help you? It has happen to me several times and it really bugs the heck out of me. The other day I was trying to fix a leaky tub at my place. I needed a few parts and some help with the job. I am no plumber but I wanted to do the job myself to save some cash. So I decided to drive to Battles Hardware on Whittier Blvd. Without boring you with the details I parked, walked in received the help I needed regarding my repair and parts I needed within 10 minutes. It is the personal care and attention you get when you shop small.

Battels Hardware
always provides a personal touch.

I really hope you do spend some of your hard earned money here in Whittier. I can tell you first hand if you do shop in Whittier you will receive great service, unique items and you will help out your community. I will be out and about this holiday season and I hope to see you out as well.

Happy Thanksgiving Whittier!

It looks like we are bidding our old friend El 7 Mares Express a farewell.
Located at 11114 Whittier Blvd El 7 Mares Express was churning out fish tacos and delicious Civeche for many years. After driving by I noticed it was now closed. We posted the picture of the now vacant building on our Instagram feed and got some answers.

Follow them on Instagram #coloniatacosguisados

Colonia Tacos Guisados has been making great tacos for quite some time in the La Puente area. It has a really great following and people have been raving about this place. Delicious tacos served with beer and other delicious drinks. With this unique location and set up this could be a hit!

If you want Colonia Tacos you need to come to our town
Whittier, California
They will be serving fish tacos and from what I understand their menu will also include tacos like the battered cauliflower taco, sounds delicious! Queso fresco & bacon, Lengua, Shrimp tacos with cocnut rice, Camaron, Taco campeon, Barbacoa, crunchy avocado tacos, Steak Vampiro steak taco, Carnitas, Taco de nopales, calabaza and much, much more!

I hear these taste as good as they look!
Can't wait to get my hands on them

This is another feather in the cap for the Whittier food scene. Fresh, new, outside of the box ideas that burst with originality. Not only is it a fresh new idea but it is a high quality item as well. I have said it before and I will say it again you can't ignore what is happening in the city of Whittier regarding food. We are on the map and are quickly becoming a "foodie" destination.

If you would like up to date information please subscribe to or blog and make sure you are following us on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter. We will keep you posted on openings, closings, great places to shop, great places to eat and much, much more.

Please get out and explore Whittier and see what it has to offer. See you soon!

"THE BEST" is really an over used term. We throw that term out on a regular basis and more than half of the time it is not warranted. But there are exceptions to every rule and that exception goes to Tony and the Bottle House Liquor store. Yes every liquor store pretty much carries most of the same items but when it comes to "customer service" Bottle House Liquor takes the cake in my book.

I have visited just about every Liquor Store in town at one point or another. There are some really great ones out there but Bottle House is my spot.

Bottle House Liquor
6018 Norwalk Blvd
Whittier, CA

The Bottle House Liquor is perfectly located right off of the 605 freeway on Whittier Blvd and Norwalk Blvd. You can stop in on your way home from work or quickly exit the freeway and grab what you need and be back on the road in no time. (if you live out of the area) Close to Pico Rivera as well many customers come from the Pico area.

Unmatched Customer Service
Bottle House is "Our House"

At the end of the day it is about the lost art of customer service. You can provide the goods but can you back it up with your service? There is a new wave of business owners in this town that have stepped up and do provide top notch customer service and for that I salute you.

If you are ever in the area and need some spirits stop by the Bottle House and meet Tony.  Make sure you let him know that My Whittier sent you. Tony and the Bottle House Liquor are proud sponsors of the My Whittier Podcast and we appreciate it!

Nohemi Gonzalez Gone To Soon

Terrorist attack in Paris

Paris seems like a world away but when tragedy strikes the world seems to shrink in size and we are affected and forced to witness the harsh reality of what is going on in the world today. Not only was the world affected but the city of Whittier also received an unwanted reality check when one of our own was taken by this tragic event.

Our Whittier community mourns the loss of Nohemi Gonzalez.
She was a Whittier High Alumni Class of 2010
and also a Cal State Long Beach Alum

Forever a Whittier Cardinal

On Tuesday 11/17 at 4pm the community of Whittier will unite on the front lawn of Whittier High School for a candle light vigil to honor the life of Nohemi Gonzalez.

She knew exactly who she was. I wish I could have met her.

If you would like to make a donation to the Gonzalez family

Thoughts and Prayers to you Nohemi you left us to soon.
When you open your eyes in the morning feel blessed. Hug the ones you love a little tighter, let the people in your life know exactly how you feel about them. We are never guaranteed tomorrow so it is so important to live and love for today. In a few weeks we will all sit down to enjoy our Thanksgiving dinner. Please take a moment to give thanks and prayers to everyone you have lost and to everyone you love.

Just yesterday I was contacted by actor Jonathan Tupanjanin and he is a proud member of

Enceladus Theatre Group
A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is committed to presenting vivid, imaginative, and creative works of live theatre.

I actually had the pleasure of talking to Jonathan about the upcoming show. I learned that all of the actors in this production are Whittier College Alumni or current student of Whittier College. I could hear the excitement in Jonathan's voice when we talked about the show. He says this is a Comedy / Musical / Audience participation all around great time event. Humor leaning toward young adults and adults "PG-13" He actually got me excited about the show. I don't get the opportunity to get out and see live performances very often and this seems like it would be a great opportunity to do so. I hope you all will to. This is also a great opportunity to experience the Ruth B Shannon Center at Whittier College.

Six awkward spelling champions learn that winning (and losing) isn't everything.

Winner of the TONY and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spel...ling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of [potentially made-up] words hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

A riotous ride complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is delightful den of comedic genius. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a fast-paced crowd pleaser and an instant theatre patron favorite.

Featuring, Charlotte Bailey, Molly Cunningham, Max Gallo, Stella June, Christian Mohn, Ruben Sanchez, Courtney Smith, Jonathan Tupanjanin, and Andrew Zubiate.

My wife woke me up Saturday morning at 6:30am because we were going to hit an Estate Sale up in Spy Glass and some Yard Sales in the area. I am always a little groggy at that time of day but once I have some coffee and get washed up I am good to go! Unfortunately the Estate Sale was a bust but we did find another one by chance and also had some luck with some local block sales. Woo hoo Danbrook St. you guys really hooked up the deals this weekend. After pounding the streets for deals my wife and I needed to refuel and decided to grab some breakfast at Forkingood Cafe in Uptown Whittier.

6744 Greenleaf Ave
We walked in around 9am and it was a cold, cloudy morning it was the kind of morning that called for comfy chairs and damn good coffee. Thank goodness Forkingood had both.

Cappuccino and Mexican Chocolate coffee was
right on point!
Instagram @forkingoodcafe
The ambiance is stellar but I will say this you will instantly "get it" or you won't. It is a very unique and original set up and I really dig it. In a world where everything seems to be the same and creative expression is at an all time low Forkingood is the perfect piece to a developing puzzle in Uptown Whittier.
Green Chili Soyrizo Fritatta
My Wife Loved It

Based on my visit I can tell you that my wife and I appreciated the fresh Gerber daisy's that were placed on our table and every other table that morning. We appreciated the kind and welcoming service. Our food arrived in a timely manner and it was delicious. Prices are on the higher end but I personally tasted the difference. I mean every now and again we as consumers have to remember that life isn't always about 5 pound cheese burgers and 30oz Coca Cola's. At the end of the day everything can't be an all you can eat Chinese buffet, right?
Smoked bacon breakfast burrito
was really good thank you Chef

What's in a name?

Forkingood Cafe. I have no idea why so many people have such issue with the name. When I heard the name I can honestly say it didn't phase me at all. But then again I have had the pleasure to meet Chef Denise Portillo on a few occasions and if you talk to her for two minutes you would understand. She's funny, sarcastic at times, smart and knows what the hell she's doing.
Denise Portillo
Graduate of Le Cordon Bleu
California School of Culinary Arts
Anytime someone takes an idea and turns it in to something real and original it is inspiring. When I sat down and ate my breakfast I actually felt like I was experiencing someones vision. The food was real good as I said the service was good. The ambiance was comfortable and laid back. I appreciate the menu and all of the different takes on Mexican classics. Forkingood will definitely be part of my restaurant rotation. I would even stop by for a relaxing cup of coffee and some conversation it is a good positive space. It sounds like they had some growing pains in January and might still be working out some kinks but I had a good experience and will be back.

Going back for the pizza can't wait
to give it a whirl
If you are a Whittier resident make sure you try to get out and frequent all of the Whittier restaurants and shops. There are so many great places to experience. You might not like them all, heck I don't like them all but at least I am able to form my own opinion on a place and go from there. I hope to see all of you out and about in Whittier real soon!

Hemlock Vapor Company, Whittier CA

Last month I was driving on Whittier Blvd and couldn't help but notice that the Casket Company that was right on the corner of Whittier Blvd and Washington Ave was gone. That place was a long time staple of the Whittier community. I can't tell you how many times I drove past that place and in a weird way I am going to miss those caskets in the windows. So as we hit the fast forward button on the ever changing Whittier landscape I drove past it again recently and saw that the old building had a new occupant! And that new occupant is...........

13131 Whittier Blvd
Whittier CA 90602
7 Days A WEEK 11:30am-8pm
Since I love all things Whittier naturally this peaked my curiosity. Now to be perfectly honest with you I have never been inside a Vape Shop in my life, I have never "Vaped" anything in my entire life and had no idea what the vape community was all about. Many friends, relatives and family members of mine do vape and it seems like every where you turn someone is using a vape devise. So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to go by and check it out and learn a little bit about the vape world.
Andrew & Mikey
Part of the great knowledgeable staff here at
Hemlock Vapor Company

I walked in on a Saturday around 3pm and before the door could even close I was greeted with "Welcome to Hemlock Vapor Company, how are you doing today?" I thought to myself, "Now that is a nice touch." I am huge on customer service so that was a huge plus for me. The next thing I noticed was the clean sleek look of the place. I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this. Really cool, good looking place with a great vibe.
Currently 10% Off All Mods
2 For 3 30ML House Juice
1 30ML House Juice 15% OFF
I walked around a bit and soaked in the atmosphere and then I jumped right in to some general questioning. I let Andrew know that I had no clue about vaping or any idea about how any of this worked. He was super cool and didn't even blink an eye he was open to any and all questions I had. So naturally I asked, what is vaping? He let me know that first and foremost vaping is a way to help people stop smoking cigarettes. The facts do show that vaping has helped millions and millions quit smoking. That is something I didn't actually know, cool.
So many items to choose from these guys
really have a great set up.
He then took me through the A,B, C's of vaping from build outs to the social aspect of it. After hearing what this was all about I had a new clarity regarding it and I didn't have a negative connotation about it at all. With that being said Hemlock Vapor Company does not sell to anyone under 18 and they do not carry any Dry Herb or Wax Pens. They do have amazing House Juices as well as many different lines of juices. They will clean your coils, provide you with battery help and adjustments. Basically anything you need from big clouds to little ones they got you covered.

All different types of Mods to choose from
Basic to Custom just let them know what you need.
Super friendly staff.
As my visit was coming to an end I had a sense of what this community was all about. The best way I can explain it to someone who doesn't vape is like this. I am a huge watch guy I really dig watches and depending on what you are in to you can rock a Timex or a Rolex it is up to you. If we are talking about vaping you can get a basic Mod or a Custom Mod (device) depending on how you want to roll. It was all pretty cool I have to say I thought about buying one right there on the spot.
My very first Vape experience!
I'm glad it was at Hemlock
"Banana Nut"

Hemlock Vapor Company has its roots firmly planted here in Whittier. They hang their hat on excellent customer service which I can vouch for first hand. I spent about an hour there asking questions and never felt like a burden. Hemlock brings great product selection and a welcoming vibe that you can't help but respect. I really appreciate the time that Andrew and Mikey took to educate me. There are many misconceptions about vaping and I am so glad I now understand what this community is all about. With this historic location, great Knowledgeable staff and attention to details I can see Hemlock being around for a very long time. If you are in the area make sure you stop by and check it out and tell them My Whittier sent ya. I will definitely be back to hang out and check in on Hemlock.

Top 3 Bowls of Menudo in Whittier

Okay you have to admit when I say the word Menudo most people either don't know what the heck it is and then when you tell them they wish they never knew what it was to begin with. There is also that small majority that still thinks of Ricky Martin headlining the group Menudo in the 80's. But no I am speaking of the wonderful Mexican soup not the singing group.

Menudo is a Mexican soup usually prepared by your grandma, mom or aunt Cucka although I have known of a few Uncles and Dads who know how to throw down in the kitchen and produce a great bowl of Menudo as well. Making a great bowl of Menudo comes from the heart. The preparation for this soup is not easy and takes time, effort and love. My mom's Menudo is second to none made with love and perfect every time. She treats her Menudo like a nurse would treat a patient. She cleans and preps the meat and make sure it is super clean. (This is a a key to great Menudo, no half steppin on the cleaning) She stays up all night making sure the temperature doesn't get to high or to low, skimming the foam off the top, Sleeping with one eye open just in case. The finished product is always off of the charts served with tortillas, beans and chorizo on the side. Once you dig in to this type of meal it is bye, bye hangover! Mom is the reason I love this dish but mom's kitchen is making Menudo every Sunday so I am always on the hunt for that delicious bowl of Menudo in Whittier.

The Queen of Menudo my Mom.

So as you can imagine I have had many, many bowls of Menudo in my life some good, some bad and some we don't need to talk about. I am going to give you my personal Top 3 best bowls of Menudo in Whittier. You can rank these how you want but these are my Top 3

Most people you ask about great Menudo in Whittier will always tell you SUPER BURRITO is the place to go. Located on Whittier Blvd Super Burrito has been a crowd pleaser for quite some time. Over the years Super B has perfected the art of Menudo serving this tasty dish 7 days a week. Seving this dish is a commitment by anyone's standards wouldn't you agree? I mean where else can you turn when it is a Tuesday and you just need to have a bowl of Menudo?

On Sunday mornings if you drive by early enough you will see the Super Burrito faithful in line outside waiting to fill their pots full of Super B Menudo. That is always a good sign and that is why Super Burrito is in my Top 3. Nice job guys I always enjoy eating at Super Burrito.

Always served with all of the fixins you will need
Super Burrito does it right

Next up Mary's Tortilleria also on Whittier Blvd. This place will blow your mind a small unsuspecting tortilleria / deli is top notch. Mary's serves a really nice bowl of Menudo it has a tasty, spicy red broth that is right on point.

10608 Whittier Blvd

If you don't like spicy broth you are still going to be okay it doesn't go over the line in my opinion BUT my tolerance for spicy food is pretty high. Served with fresh tortillas made in house Mary's is hard to beat. If you like to keep it real and haven't tried Mary's get up early one morning and dig in. It is a small dining area and can get a little crowded at times but its worth the experience.
see video below

Jack's Diner in Whittier has been making people happy since 1933 and making me happy since the late 70's. I can almost guarantee Jack's wasn't serving Menudo back then. Now when most Whittier peeps think of Jack's they think of the delicious chicken dinner or maybe steak and eggs for breakfast? How about a large stack of pancakes or a slice of pie? Biscuits and gravy?

13221 Whittuer Blvd
Since 1933

Yes me to but I am here to tell you that Jack's Diner is currently serving the best bowl of Menudo in Whittier. I know you die hards out there are shaking your head saying, "What the hell is this dude talking about?" So let me repeat myself, Jack's Diner on Whittier Blvd is currently serving the best bowl of Menudo in town. Served any way you want it, lot's of meat, light meat, lot's of soup, light soup? You name it and they will give it to you just like you ask. Oh and if you want to go next level order a chorizo burrito on the side they even have that on point.

Jack's Diner is knocking it out of the park
with their Menudo. This was my bowl served with 4 corn torts

So there it is my current Top 3 Best places to grab a great bowl of Menudo. If you have a place you think is great and would recommend please feel free to drop me a line. I would love to hear your suggestions and give your place a try.

Honorable mentions: These are some really good places to try as well

  • La Moderna Bakery - Although you can't eat here you can pick up a great bowl of Menudo here at La Moderna. Always good you just have to make sure you there nice and early to get your pot filled. 8035 1/2 Norwalk Blvd
  • Casa Jimenez - I really enjoy Casa Jimenez and they make a good bowl of Menudo as well. Not in my Top 3 but I do enjoy this restaurant and eat here often. 11250 Whittier Blvd
  • Greenleaf Cafe - I used to enjoy this place a lot more back in the day but as I understand you can still grab a decent bowl. 7203 Greenleaf Ave 562-693-2337
  • Uptown Mexican Cafe - You know what? I really enjoy the All You Can Eat buffet on Sundays. Some people give this place a bad rap but I have always enjoyed it every time I have gone. 7040 Greenleaf Ave 562-945-5877

Thanks for reading my blog I hope you enjoyed it. Please do me a solid and get out and enjoy everything Whittier has to offer. We have so many great places to shop and eat and many of these places are run by people just like you and me. So go out and have a great time and like I said before if you have a place that you would like me to try out drop me a line either here or direct at
